After a four-year hiatus, RK is back on the big screen in the much delayed and anticipated offering, Shamshera. Was it worth the wait? Does it do justice to RK’s craft or end up as a big heap of disappointment? Let’s find out.
Ranbir’s Shamshera is a Lone Ranger who later transitions into Robin Hood. The plot isn’t different from what the promos offered. Shamshera (Ranbir) is the leader of the downtrodden, lower-caste tribals called Khamerans. They live in these barren landscapes surrounded by mountains and trenches. Ruled by the British army, their clan is governed by the dreaded police officer Shuddh Singh (Sanjay Dutt), whose job is to keep these tribals under control. Wanting to free his tribe from this oppression, Shamshera plans a revolt that goes awry, resulting in the ultimate sacrifice – his death!
The plot races 25 years ahead to introduce us to his son Baali (also Ranbir, duh) who dreams of becoming an officer himself. His hate and disdain for his father, who abandoned him years ago, trumps his loyalty to his people. But it doesn’t take too long for the blindfold to slip and reveal the truth. Now on the path to freeing his own tribe and also seeking vengeance for his father’s death, Baali becomes Shamshera and fights a twofold battle against Shuddh Singh and the British officers. Along the way, he falls in love with Sona (Vaani Kapoor), becomes a father nearing the climax and attempts to have a full-blown Brave-Heart moment, trying to rouse the valour of his tribe to fight the oppression they have suffered.

former Australia captain Ricky Ponting reckons that the Indian team management should pick Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik ahead of Ishan Kishan in the squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
Pant affirmed his status as a match winner in the white-ball format with his maiden ODI hundred against England in the third ODI of the recently concluded series. He is yet to find his rhythm in the T20Is.
As for Karthik, he earned a recall to the Indian squad after a very successful IPL season for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Karthik also performed well in the South Africa T20Is to justify his place in the team.
Ponting has worked closely with Rishabh Pant at Delhi Capitals and is well aware of his strengths, while the former Australia captain thinks veteran all-rounder Dinesh Karthik must also fill a spot in India’s middle-order.
“We have seen what Rishabh is capable of in 50-over cricket and I know absolutely what he is capable of in the T20 game,” Ponting said on the latest episode of The ICC Review.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lauded all vaccinators for administering 200 crore Covid vaccine doses as of July 17.
The scale and speed that India imparted to the world’s largest vaccination programme has been spectacular and this has happened due to the efforts of people like you,” PM Modi wrote in an appreciation letter thanking vaccinators for their contribution.
This comes a year after the launch of the world’s largest Covid-19 vaccination drive. India crossed the milestone of administering 200 crore vaccination doses on Sunday (July 17).
India has “created history again”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday.
“India creates history again! Congrats to all Indians on crossing the special figure of 200 crore vaccine doses. Proud of those who contributed to making India’s vaccination drive unparalleled in scale and speed. This has strengthened the global fight against Covid-19,” PM Modi tweeted.
Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted: “Witness the history in making! India under PM @NarendraModi Ji’s leadership is all set to achieve the 200-crore Covid-19 vaccination mark! Countdown starts.”
On Tuesday, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that India’s cumulative Covid-19 vaccination coverage exceeded a total of 200.33 crores.
Mandaviya launched ‘Covid Vaccination Amrit Mahotsav’ at Covid Vaccination Camp in Nirman Bhawan on Friday and appealed to the masses to get the free dose so as to ensure protection against Covid-19.”
“All Health Ministry employees initiated their inoculation of the free doses. My appeal to all citizens above the age of 18 years to get the free dose to ensure your protection against Covid-19,” said Mandaviya.
“On ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav‘, all eligible people (18+) can get a free precaution dose for the next 75 days,” he added.
The free vaccination drive has been launched with the aim of increasing the uptake of the precautionary dose of the Covid vaccine among the eligible adult population.
This special vaccination drive is a part of the celebration of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav‘ and aims to provide free precaution doses for all adults (18 years and above) eligible population at Government Covid Vaccination Centres (CVCs).
The Centre has announced a special drive ‘Covid Vaccination Amrit Mahotsava‘ to be launched to provide free precaution doses at all Government Covid Vaccination Centres for persons aged 18 years and above for 75 days from July 15 to September 30, 2022.
Those eligible for the precaution dose include all persons above 18 years who have completed 6 months (or 26 weeks) from the date of administration of the second dose.

]]>In its latest spree of layoffs, Tesla confirmed that it will fire 229 more of its employees working from the San Mateo, California office. The Elon Musk-owned electric vehicle company revealed the information through a regulatory filing.
These employees worked in the company’s Autopilot team. The San Mateo, California office had about 276 workers, and according to a TechCrunch report, the remaining 47 workers may be sent to work in Tesla’s Buffalo Autopilot office.
The workers who were fired were mostly low-skilled and had low-wage jobs, such as Autopilot data labelling, which involves determining if Tesla’s algorithm identified an object well or poorly
The report further added that these layoffs are a part of the 10 per cent workforce reduction, which founder Musk had announced earlier this year.
Tesla’s director of AI, Andrej Karpathy, who led the Autopilot vision team, also quit without revealing the reasons behind his decision. Karpathy said that he has no concrete plans for what’s next but looks to spend more time revisiting his long-term passions around technical work in AI, open source and education.
Musk had informed the employees about the layoffs via email. The billionaire said in the email there will be job cuts and he has a “super bad feeling” about the economy as well. Musk also noted in the email that the company has paused “all hiring worldwide”.
Tesla fired some of its employees without giving them a 60-day notice, which violates the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. This attracted a lawsuit, which was filed by two former employees who were fired in mid-June.

]]>The United States House of Representatives approved Indian-origin Congressman Ro Khanna’s amendment to the National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) on Thursday, paving the way for an India-specific waiver for the CAATSA sanctions.
The amendment was passed by voice vote as part of an en bloc amendment during floor consideration of the NDAA. While it doesn’t equal a decision on Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), it urges the administration to grant a waiver.
Afterwards, Ro Khanna said that it will further strengthen US and India defense partnership.
“There is no relationship of greater significance to US strategic interests than the US-India partnership. My bipartisan NDAA amendment marks the most significant piece of legislation for US-India relations out of Congress since the US-India nuclear deal,” he said.
The Khanna amendment will affirm the United States’ partnership with India and urge the Biden administration to use their authority to provide India with a CAATSA waiver to help deter aggressors like China.

In what may be seen as another sign that all’s not well in the BJP’s alliance with Janata Dal (United) in Bihar, no welcome advertisements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi were given by the Nitish Kumar government ahead of his visit to Patna today.
The absence becomes starker when one sees newspapers in Jharkhand — a state ruled by an anti-BJP alliance led by Hemant Soren — filled with such ads. PM Modi is to visit Deoghar in Jharkhand before Patna the same day.
In Patna, he will inaugurate a Centenary Pillar on the assembly premises as part of a closing ceremony to mark 100 years of the building. This is the first time a prime minister is coming to the Bihar assembly complex. That’s being attributed to the influence of Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha, who comes from the BJP. PM Modi will lay the foundation of a museum too.
While there is no “welcome” advertisement from the assembly today, Mr Sinha underlined that there was one that came out yesterday. He added, “The entire government is working overtime to ensure the PM’s visit to the assembly is a historic one.” The ad issued yesterday was a public invitation.
A number of senior JDU leaders said the absence of welcome ads from the government “may be a human error”. To say that it’s been done intentionally would be an exaggeration, they insisted, not willing to be named. They also underlined that the Prime Minister is visiting on invitation of the Speaker and thus “the assembly secretariat is active for that”. “Whatever cooperation was expected from the state government departments, it was given,” said a JDU leader.
There is, however, another ad that has caught attention. Businessman Jeevan Kumar, representing an organisation called Hindu Jagran Manch, has issued a full-front-page welcome ad for PM Modi.
Jeevan Kumar has been in the sand business for years, and has made news too. Last year, when senior leaders from the ruling alliance attended his son’s birthday party, Nitish Kumar was so angry with those from the JDU that he did not talk to many of them for months, it is learnt.
Before coming to Patna, PM Modi will inaugurate the building for an All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) and an airport in Jharkhand’s Deoghar, besides laying the foundation of some projects. The central government has given ads in several newspapers about this.
The Bihar alliance has seen some disagreements between the partners over the past few months, a recent one being over the Agnipath defence recruitment scheme. While the BJP continued to defend the scheme despite protests – particularly in Bihar – the JDU spoke against the four-year contractual hiring of soldiers.
